We can track the origins of video games back to when Edward Condon debuted his computer for the Westinghouse display at the World’s Fair back in 1940. Along with its other functions, the computer was able to play the traditional mathematical strategy game, Nim. Video games have come a long way since then, as the medium has taken full advantage of the many technological advances that years of innovation and development has afforded the genre.
While many consoles have exhibited the extent of modern technological advancements, it all comes back to the PC as having the most potential for powerful graphics out of all of them. This is why we’ve put together a list of the most gorgeous games on the PC. Read on to know more about the most graphically stunning PC games of all time!
Batman Arkham Asylum (2010)
While this might be a rather surprising pick due to the game being released almost a decade ago, Batman Arkham Asylum is still one of the most visually stunning games of all time. The other games on this list might have the upper hand when it comes to sheer power, but Batman Arkham Asylum’s seamless blending of realism and the comic book style still amazes to this day. CBR notes that this is because of Rocksteady Studio’s conscious decision to take elements of the Batman comic books and translate them onto the screen.
Far Cry 5 (2018)
Developers usually avoid using real places in video games, as it provides people with a point of comparison – Far Cry 5 does the opposite. Featured in HP’s list of the best-looking PC games, Far Cry 5 captures Montana’s rugged mountains and lush forests to create the most gorgeous virtual terrains. The game portrays the beauty of the state’s vibrant landscapes, all while being the backdrop of a radical separatist dispute in one of the remaining frontiers of the United States. To achieve these stunning scenes, the developers actually went out and spent weeks in Montana to capture the landscape and translate it in the game.
Red Dead Redemption 2 (2019)
It would be an injustice to exclude Red Dead Redemption 2 in a list of games with the best graphics. Rockstar Games’ most recent blockbuster title fully utilizes the technological innovations of the modern age, with its stellar graphics at 4k resolution running at 60 frames per second. This is a feat made more impressive considering the size of the game and the incredible attention to detail that the developers have put in, making each strand of hair and every single sight in the game a masterclass on what video games can look like in the 21st century.
Witcher 3: Wild Hunt (2018)
By now, everyone is familiar with the world’s favorite witcher, Geralt of Rivia, thanks to the new binge-worthy Netflix series. But the game that embodies the success of the franchise the most is 2015’s Witcher 3: Wild Hunt. Its graphics tend to be overlooked due to the extraordinary gameplay, but make no mistake that it is a technological masterpiece that can compete with any of the games in this list. It brings the world of The Witcher to life through its intricate landscapes and nightmare-inducing monster designs. Another aspect of the graphics that show just how much care the developers put into the game is Geralt’s beard, which grows longer the more time you spend playing.
