The Lapsed Gamer: What I’m Currently Playing (December 2018)

For the last year and a half, I’ve been documenting my journey as a Lapsed Gamer on my blog. This December, I can now proudly (?) say that I’ve made a backlog. I should enjoy, but the anxiety of starting a new game while I’m still neck-deep in the poison lakes of Blighttown.

But Black Friday and Cyber Monday sales came, and I got an amazing deal on some games on the Nintendo Switch eShop. Plus, I got a sweet deal on a gaming PC just in time for the Steam Winter sale. So hello backlog. Here are the games I’m currently playing, until I dive deep into the big pile of games I have stocked up for the first few months of 2019.

Batman: Arkham Asylum

This is a game I’ve been wanting to play for years. Batman in a metroidvania-style game set in Arkham Asylum, fighting his rogues gallery? Voiced by Kevin Conroy, with Joker voiced by Mark Hamill? Plus, Humble Bundle putting this game out on a steep discount? Hell yes, you know I’d take it.

I’m not yet far into the game, but it’s such a great experience so far and I can’t wait to go deeper into the bowels of Arkham Asylum so I can get on to the next Arkham game.

Dark Souls Remastered

Nope, still not done with this. I’m currently in the first platform of Blighttown and those infested barbarians are kicking my ass. I beat the Capra Demon and the Gaping Dragon, but I’m getting bodied by these horrible things.

And I wouldn’t have it any other way.

Something something praise the sun, I still have a looooong way to go.

Super Smash Bros Ultimate

Mario, you a-monster!

I suck at fighting games.

I suck at Smash Bros.

I still play this and get bodied all of the frigging time just so I can unlock all of the stupid fighters.

Online still sucks, it’s lag-town out there.

Warframe

I’m having so much fun going online in Warframe, playing an overpowered space ninja, and slaughtering my way through crowds of hostile aliens. Right now, online isn’t as crowded as it used to, but most of the missions are actually doable solo. It’s just not as satisfying as going through these missions with a crew, though.

Ah, who cares, I’m having so much fun slicing through another bunch of Infected with my Heat Swords like a hot knife through butter.

Paladins

Oh hey, another free-to-play shooter! Paladins is , well, the next best thing you can play while Blizzard is sitting on their thumbs on porting Overwatch over.

I’m tempted to make a Diablo Immortal jab and something about having phones, but no. I’ll be the bigger man.

Solar Flux

Solar Flux is a bit of a weird one. You can’t play it with a controller. You have to use the touchscreen to control your ship in this puzzler. You’d think that it’s going to feel strange controlling a Nintendo Switch game with the touchscreen, but it’s actually not.

In Solar Flux players helm a deep-space mission to save dying stars across the universe by reigniting them with orbs of plasma. Hazards abound in this gargantuan task; from asteroids and comets, to laser grids, and even the stars themselves. Intrepid commanders will have to carefully plan their movement and ration their fuel to navigate the stars and save the universe. This trek will take players through 80 missions across four different galaxies and test their minds as well as their courage.

You can get Solar Flux for $9.99 here.
