Doctor Who: The Big Bang [REVIEW]

Sorry: very Doctor Who-intensive post ahead. Sorry for those who don’t watch this show – or rather I feel sorry for you.

If it’s not obvious from my tweets these last few months, I’m pretty much a huge Doctor Who fan right now. The current season turned me from a casual “download it when I have the time” watcher to a “holy shit when is the next episode coming out goddammit” Who-head. Wait, is there even such a term as Who-head? Anyway, yeah. Doctor Who rocks. Also, the fact that the girl playing Amy Pond, Karen Gillan, is arguably one of the cutest women on TV right now, helps.

Karen Gillan
Wait.

Disturbing obsessions with The Doctor’s cute companion aside, I found Doctor Who season five to be an insanely addictive show. It’s got all sorts of weird timey-wimey stuff mixed with just the right amount of camp to appeal to anyone with a passing interest in time travel stories. The 11th Doctor, Matt Smith, is just way too much fun to watch, filled to the brim with manic energy. From the way he was jumping everywhere, talking too fast in technobabble, and trying to scare his enemies into submission with “IM THE DOCTOR!” as he waved his sonic screwdriver around, you just know that he’s having a grand time playing The Doctor.

The Doctor’s so badass, he even refuses a kiss from Amy.

I’m going to be honest with you guys: as much as I love the show right now, I thought season five was just so-so. The first episode was pretty neat, even though there was no tension whatsoever (come on, a bunch of UFOs were threatening to destroy the world, and you never felt scared?) and the rest of the season meandered from just ok (“Vincent and The Doctor”) to the horrible (“Victory of the Daleks”). Thank goodness there were episodes like “Cold Blood” and “Flesh And Stone” which were awesome.

However, nothing – and I mean nothing – compares to “The Big Bang”. So the previous episode ended on a cliffhanger, leaving The Doctor trapped inside The Pandorica, Amy Pond seemingly dead at the hands of a duplicate of her dead-but-never-really-existed (it’s complicated, wibbly wobbly timey wimey stuff) fiancé, Rory, and with the Tardis blown into bits, and the universe collapsing onto itself. Oh yeah, the only way to save the universe was to reboot it by recreating the big bang.

To say that it’s kind of an impossible situation to get out of is an understatement.

The Doctor and young Amy Pond

The first 12 minutes of this episode was better than the entire season if you ask me. It was one twist after another, delivered in quick succession. I had to pause and rewind every few seconds (in between screaming “HOLY SHIT WHAT JUST HAPPENED”) just to figure out what the heck was going on.

Also, it featured The Doctor time-jumping between 200 A.D. and 1996 wearing a fez.

Doctor Who Matt Smith Fez

And believe me, I am now convinced that you need to put a fez on everything to make it better. I think I want to wear a fez on my next gig.

I’m rather surprised at how neatly they wrapped up almost everything for the finale, but I can’t say I’m disappointed. Everything about this episode was fucking EPIC. Also, it had Amy Pond being OMGSOCUTESY in a wedding gown.

Amy Pond
I’ll just leave this here.

My favorite episode up to this point was “Blink.” Now I’m confused, because “The Big Bang” is an instant classic.

Seriously, watch it.

What do you think of the Doctor Who season 5 finale? Did you find “The Big Bang” as awesome as I found it? Share your thoughts in the comments!

  1. !!! I can’t believe you thought that “Vincent and the Doctor” was just okay. D: Were you not bawling!

Although, I would agree that there were a lot of less-than-stellar episodes this season. I did like the first one, though. And the continuity was super apparent in series 5 (no Bad Wolf super-cleverly hidden, omg that was important?), what with the crack and stuff.

I still love “Blink” the most, but this might just be an instant second favorite.

    1. You're right! I thought the cracks being pegged on at the end of every episode was an in-your-face way of telling you "THESE CRACKS ARE IMPORTANT PAY ATTENTION." They could've done away with those cracks showing up almost everywhere.

Lol, I loved the "Sorry for those who don’t watch this show". I have tried to make my friends watch this show, but they got bored pretty quick. I love it though. I am a "whovian".:)

  2. First 12 minutes of the finale made me shit bricks!

Also, I fucken love Karen Gillan. That is why I loved the last scene because I saw her smooth silky armpits.

    I’m weird, I know.

    1. OH YES THOSE ARMPITS 8->

  3. AWESOME FINALE IS AWESOME. ‘Nuff said.

    1. I rewatched it loads of times already, but it's still the same amount of awesome for me everytime!

  4. Yes, Blink will always be my favorite Who episode (that reminds me, Carey Mulligan should also be considered as a future companion!). But this two-part finale trumps the 3 parter that RTD did to end his reign on season 4.

And I agree that season 5 was just so-so and for me Rose, aside from having nice tits, is still my favorite companion. But Amy is a close 2nd.

    1. I wouldn't mind seeing an entire season of Carey Mulligan running around the TARDIS too! Great idea!

  5. My sister has a few DVDs lying around in her room. Perhaps I’d go give it a look one of these days in between work and diaper duties.

    1. Which Doctor is on your sister's DVDs?

  6. too bad i haven't watched a single episode. haha

BTW, The Daily Blah has moved! It is now located at http://thedailyblah.co.cc please update your feed subscriptions and linkbacks accordingly. THANKS!

    – and i'm using your previous theme (parang nagpalit lang tayo, haha!) ^_^

    1. LOL, you should watch it! Awesome show is awesome. Also, updated your link already!

  7. "I think I want to wear a fez on my next gig."

You should do that. Fez are cool. The children want to wear some to their school picnic. Help start a trend.

    1. Buying a fez tonight when I get off work, lol.

  8. Oh. Obviously you shouldn't let River Song see you wearing it, but then, you already know that.

    1. 3 points:

      1) doctor who fans are called ‘whovians’

      2) you can see billie pipers tits at ‘seacret diary of a call girl’ and ironically there’s episode staring matt smith (the 11th doctor)

      3) fez are cool!!!!! just like bowties.

  9. I just finished watching The Big Bang, and I enjoyed it. I’m somewhat confused though. If Amy’s parents fell into the crack and never existed, wouldn’t Amy have been erased from existence too?

I guess I don’t quite understand the rules of Doctor Who’s universe yet ( this is my first season of following the show).

    1. Doctor Who’s internal logic doesn’t make sense most of the time (I swear their continuity is totally screwed-up), so I usually don’t even try to entertain those questions. I just usually try to accept most of the things they show at face value.

But from what I can gather from the previous episodes is that even though they never existed, most of they things they own never get erased – that’s why Rory’s engagement ring’s still there, even though nobody owns that ring anymore. It’s a stretch to connect that to Amy, but it’s the closest to an explanation I can understand.

Also, yes, Doctor Who’s a totally enjoyable show! High five, fellow n00b Whovian!
