Most of us use social media sites like Twitter, Facebook and Google+ to procrastinate, communicate and catch up with our friends, but social media is, in recent years, growing beyond mere channels for mild amusement. For every useless Twitter hashtag like #ImproveFilmTitlesByAddingInMyPants, we have seen the outrage over the dancing kid on Willie Revillame’s show, among other things, thrive on social media.

This is what the Tatt Awards is all about. The Tatt Awards aim to shine the limelight on technophiles, video vamps, and ardent advocates for change, giving them the chance to be recognized for their passion to create, inspire and lead
in social media.

The Advocate: a person or a group of individuals who worked to improve the state of societal cause in the Philippines through social media

Who else here feels like they’ve gone through hell and back? Good. Nice to know that I’m not alone.

Okay, I’ll make this quick and dirty. This is one of the worst things that everyone here has gone through in recent memory, and us who are lucky enough to be able to stay in their warm and cozy homes, and just shake their heads in disbelief at the pictures and videos of Ondoy’s rampage, should be able to do something to help those who were hit hard.

I don’t mean to add to the noise, but posting a retarded entry (I’ve got one written actually) just feels so improper. I’ll just pay my respects for one of the most awesome Filipinos to have ever walked the earth.

I want to write a rambling entry about one of my earliest memories from the first EDSA Revolt. I just don’t know how to begin. So let me just say this: the very fact that we have the freedom to post practically whatever we want in these here weblogs stem from this little thing she inspired called ‘People Power.’ And that’s awesome.

Rest in peace, Cory Aquino. You’ve done well. An entire nation is grateful.

Piano on Fire: Aloha, Eraserheads

I honestly don’t want to write about the Eraserheads because, well, everyone else is blogging about it now and I don’t know what else to add to the babble. I don’t want to write a blow-by-blow account of the concert, or even a recollection of my favorite moments. I shan’t bore you with that. But still, even though it’s been a day after the concert, I’m still on a high and I’m typing away this entry even if I can barely keep my eyes open.

I’m not the biggest Eraserheads fan around. I know of a hundred people who can claim that they are the biggest fan. I only have Cutterpillow and Fruitcake (plus the book) in my collection. Like so many people, I thought they jumped the shark when Sticker Happy came out. I’ve never seen them perform live.

But if you’re a kid growing up in the 90′s, they’re inescapable. I was able to get a copy of Circus recently and I was amazed to discover that I know every track by heart, thanks to my class adviser who played the album in an endless loop every single day of my 5th grade life.(...)

This be my Post-Valentine’s Day, um, Post

Let me get this out of my chest: Valentine’s Day is a big crock of shit.

Sure, it feels good dedicating one whole day to love. And of course, if you’ve got dates and all, it wouldn’t hurt to blow a fortune on flowers, chocolates, various stuffed animals, and motel fees just to make your beloved feel good. Maybe I’m just a bit bitter because I did spend a fortune on that stuff (except for the motel fees; I’m a God-fearing citizen who believes in abstinence) and for all intents and purposes I’ll be sucking dicks along EDSA for 20 pesos a pop just to get through the rest of the month.

Women love it when men go out of their way to spend loads of money for something impractical and will rot for a few days. And us men would want nothing more than the adulation and happiness (read: blowjobs) that comes out of that herculean effort. I strongly believe I could save my time by going up to my girlfriend and dumping the entire contents of my wallet in a paper shredder while screaming “I LOVE YOU! SEE?! I’M DESTROYING MY LIFE SAVINGS FOR YOU! ALSO PAY FOR DINNER BECAUSE I’M OFFICIALLY BROKE”.(...)

The World has Always Been Crazy, We Just Don’t Notice It: Mayor Beats Up 56 Year Old Man and 14 Year Old Boy

I interrupt the retardery to bring you guys something really appaling. This is certainly something not everybody should go through, especially not during the Christmas season.

18 year-old Bambee dela Paz, student athlete, had gone through a horrible experience involving her family and some men in power.

I’ll let these snippets from her blog entry speak for itself.

So, I just had the worst day of my life.
At around 1:30 PM today, at Valley Golf and Country Club, Antipolo City, Mayor Nasser Pangandaman, Jr., Mayor of Masiu City, Lanao del Sur, his father, Secretary Nasser Pangandaman of the Department of Agrarian Reform, and company, beat my defenseless 56-year-old dad and my 14-year-old brother to a pulp because of some stupid misunderstanding on the golf course.

Things get heated up. Voices were raised. But never, in my wildest dreams, did I ever imagine that someone would pull out a punch. Apparently not. He attacks my father. His flightmates, maybe 2 or 3 of them, rush to his aid and beat up my father.
My 56-year-old father. My younger brother and I could not just watch. We rushed to break the fight. My younger brother pleads to the mayor to please stop it. To not hurt my dad. To just stop. His words still ring through my head…”Sorry na po, sorry na po…tama na…tama na po…” With his hands in front of his chest in a praying position. PLEADING. The mayor socks him in the face.
My brother defended himself. My dad is still on the ground getting clobbered. My brother is the same way. I try to stop the fight, but all I can do is stop one person. There were 4 or 5 of them attacking now.

Tell me if you haven’t felt this when starting a new relationship after a series of failed ones: your past failures, whether real or imagined, will always come back to haunt you. Granted, the new girlfriend will most definitely be not be like my exes (Psychotic stalker-ish otaku ex? Psuedo-fashionista with absolutely no fashion sense at all and with an IQ of a turnip? Come on), but still, everyone comes from a string of failed relationships, and we all can’t help but blame ourselves from time to time.

Lemme ask you guys, who here hasn’t been through a shitty relationship before? We all get the urge to start a new one, but in the back of our head, we’d all have fears and insecurities every now and then.(...)

After the OFW brouhaha, Malu Fernandez has once again tried to ruffle everyone’s feathers by being as tactless as she hits this time, the people who brought that issue into the open – bloggers. In her latest article, “The Problem With Blogging…“, she says:

I believe in the freedom of speech. By all means say what you need to say. Unfortunately for most of the bloggers without advertising you get paid nothing. If in fact you do get paid then hooray for you. But blogging, aside from Perez Hilton and the other big time bloggers (you know who you are) is for me a slacker job or a medium and pastime for lonely people to connect. Unless you’re in bloody Siberia or in a Gulag prison, try stepping outside your comfort zone and turn off the laptop or pc, you just might find some real live people to talk to instead of typing away in cyber space.

Okay, I admit I refused to comment on the issue the first time it came out because, honestly, I find it LOL. Her original article was in bad taste and all and I refuse to give her justification of any kind by commenting on it. Same as now. I’m just LOL-ing at it and shrugging it off.

But I’m curious. What do YOU think of this whole Malu Fernandez versus the bloggers thing?

In This Entry Ade Talks About Quitting His Job. And Call Centers.

I never blog about work. You see, the last thing I want to see on my desk on a Monday morning would be a printed screenshot of my blog with a pink post-it attached to it with the words “YOU ARE FUCKING FIRED” hastily scrawled on it by my boss who probably was suffering a heart attack while he was writing it.

But this time I guess it’s time to finally put off that one rule because I made a decision I was putting off doing for the longest time. Remember thing I wanted to have #1? Last February 6, I filed my letter of resignation. In case you didn’t know (or care), I spent the last year and nine months working for one of the call centers in Ortigas, doing rotating gigs in the night, reverse-mid, and morning shifts, and taking in calls like this:

Ade: Now, sir, if you just very kindly right click on the icon-
Idiot: You mean right click?
Ade: Yes.
Idiot: Ah. Right click?
Ade: Yes, sir.
Idiot: Okay. Right click?
Ade: Yeeeees.
Idiot: Right click?
Ade: Yes.
Idiot: Did you just say right click?
Ade: … yeah.
Idiot: Right click?
Ade: …
Idiot: …
Idiot: Left or right?

I actually have no regrets whatsoever working in the industry, and would actually recommend it to anyone willing to sell their soul to Lord Satan for night differential (just kidding boss I need my backpay ktnxbai).(...)
