iOS Games I’m Playing Right Now

You know, I haven’t been updating this blog for a while now. Why do you keep on coming back? It’s not like I’m regaling you with stories of how stupid my life is recently. Do you see me whining here about the assholes I ride with on the MRT? No. And it’s not like I don’t have shit to tell you, my life’s been fucking eventful and all as of late. But this is not what I want to talk about, internet. Let us sit down, while I hold your hand, look deep into your eyes, and wait for you to be genuinely interested in what I have to say.

You see, I seriously want to talk about my favorite iOS games for this month. It’s very important that I have to talk to you about these apps that I love using right now. You know where my weekends go.

The Dark Meadow

I like this game, but it feels like a watered-down Infinity Blade, at least in gameplay. And since Infinity Blade is one of my ultimate all-time favorite iOS games, this shouldn’t bode well for Dark Meadow, right? What this game doesn’t have in gameplay, it makes up for it in storytelling. Dark, creepy, if not a bit repetitive, Dark Meadow is survival horror for iOS done right. I played this game the first time on the day before Halloween, and I swear, I was getting creeped the fuck out. I spit at you, you stupid Silent Hill iOS game, this is how you do it.(...)

Doctor Who: The Wedding of River Song [Review]

After an awesome season, the mystery of the Doctor’s death in Lake Silencio, Utah has been finally solved. And boy, it was a ride. We’ve all followed this story with much gusto, and now we’ve come to the end, I find how the Doctor managed to escape his demise a bit… underwhelming.

I actually found the use of the [SPOILER] Tessalecta as a way for the Doctor to escape death brilliant, and the use of the Ganger for the entire season as a red herring was a great misdirect. Too bad the reveal and the whole pacing of the episode was off. It didn’t have the huge emotional impact of the last season’s finale, and that part disappointed me big time.

It’s not so bad though. The Silence, after the events of The Day of the Moon, were once again a credible threat not just for our favorite TARDIS crew but also for humanity as a whole. Moffat once again crammed all his signature crazy ideas in the script, and every single one of them worked.

Dentist Time at K Dental Studio!

A couple of weeks back, I managed to get out of my computer chair for a few hours to visit K Dental Studio at Medical Plaza Ortigas. I was a bit nervous – you see, dental hygiene isn’t really a priority when you live on the internet and I was scared to find out what sort of evils live in my mouth without my knowledge.

Unlike most people, I’m not scared of dentists and their drills and torture chamber-like examination rooms. However, I can totally understand where the fear is coming from. Try sitting on that chair for hours with your mouth wired open while a half-interested dental assistant pokes your mouth with various implements that look like they came straight out of a horror film – yeah, that will surely break even the strongest of spirits.

I was surprised at how different K Dental Studio feels like from other dental clinics I’ve been to. Yes it still looks like a clinic, but it’s doesn’t have that foreboding sense of doom that most people feel when they visit other clinics.(...)

I noticed lately that I have been writing about Doctor Who on this blog a lot. I mean, it’s okay since my beginner’s guide to the show has been cited by no less than the official BBCA Doctor Who Tumblr as a great guide for new Whovians. But when you see nothing but “DOCTOR WHO DOCTOR WHO DOCTOR WHO DOCTOR WHO DOCTOR WHO DOCTOR WHO DOCTOR WHO DOCTOR WHO DOCTOR WHO DOCTOR WHO DOCTOR WHO ” when you open up this blog, it’s time to switch formats. Again. I’m surprised I don’t get comments that say “ADE STOP BLOGGING ABOUT DOCTOR WHO ALREADY OK WE GET IT YOU LIKE THE SHOW.”

And just in time, because Bim opened up a new site catering to all sorts of geekery. It’s called Geek Out, and it’s filled to the brim with goodies for, well, geeks. I decided to continue writing my Doctor Who articles over there at the Idiot Box column. Now, you can experience me not updating this blog for weeks at a time again!(...)

Doctor Who: Let’s Kill Hitler [Review]

After three long, excruciating months, Doctor Who is finally back, giving us the brand of time bending and mind blowing stories that we’ve always loved. And what better way to come back from a hiatus than to give us an episode called Let’s Kill Hitler? For months, people have speculated over the meaning of the title – did the Doctor accidentally save Hitler’s life that he must kill the Führer? Is it going to be a deep, dark moral struggle of an episode where the Doctor makes an excruciating choice? Actually, no. These aren’t the RTD years, silly. This is Steven Moffat writing, and he doesn’t care at all about that silly moral conundrum stuff.

Spoilers on ahead.

The thing about Hitler is that he’s one of history’s biggest monsters that dedicating an entire episode to him be too dark and Doctor Who is a children’s show – it can’t get that dark. So I was really glad that Hitler was just a red herring (sorry, can’t resist) thrown in to keep the fans talking, and then dealt with in the quickest fashion: Rory punches Hitler, and then he gets to say a line only the best actors have dreamed of saying – “SHUT UP, HITLER!” – and then the TARDIS crew lock him up in a cupboard, to be forgotten for the rest of the episode. The total absurdity of it all had me in stitches.(...)

TDK ST800 Review (Or the responsibility of taking care of stuff I don’t own)

For some reason, people think I’m a reliable person to entrust with their electronic equipment. And they’re even willing to lend me their expensive headphones for me to review. While this is an amazing thing (people never trust me with ANYTHING before, especially not their daughters) I am scared shitless of breaking stuff.

Which brings me to this review. I was sent a TDK ST800 HiFi headphone for review, and it’s a loaner, which makes it worse, because what if I break this shit? Entrusting me with your stuff: big responsibility for Ade, and it might make my head (and loins, but don’t quote me on that) explode.

Anyway, I did review it for Technogra.ph, so you might as well go over on to that site and read my pseudo-expert review on these pretty nice cans. Clickety-click for my TDK ST800 review!

When Rico first asked me if I want to review a pair of headphones for Technograph, I couldn’t believe it. I mean, somebody actually entrusting me with a piece of expensive electronic equipment – that’s new. Since Rico thinks I have quite the credentials for reviewing a pair of headphones—mainly because I have a band, prefer lossless audio over regular MP3s, and consider myself as kind of a budding audiophile [not really] — I was given the v-JAYS for me to review. I still think he’s crazy for letting me review it, though.

Overall, I think the v-JAYS are a solid pair of headphones, despite the really awkward name. I have v-JAYS on my head!

Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows Part 2 [Review]

I remember the time I bought my copy of Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows clearly. Well, I did blog about it and I read that post every so often so there’s just no way I can forget my experience, but still. After I bought my copy of the book the day it was released, I went straight home and read it. As I finished the novel, I realized that I was just about to be late for work. Sleep? Fuck that. I went to work groggy as hell and doing a fuckton of things wrong. I didn’t care. I just finished the seventh Harry Potter book – nothing else mattered.

And now, four years later, I’m watching Deathly Hallows Part 2 – eighth and last film of the Harry Potter film franchise (unless they decide to reboot the damn thing, like what Hollywood does to so many things as of late) and is based on the final, epic book (DUH). However, I’m not going to be one of those fans who will go “Harry Potter is over – a part of my childhood died!” because I was in college when I started reading it, and that sort of distress over childhood memories is reserved for Turtles Forever and when Mirage sold the rights to the TMNT to Nickelodeon to make a possibly craptastic TV show.(...)

Transformers: Dark of the Moon Review

I really don’t have a problem with dumb movies, mind you. You’re reading the blog of the guy who’s enjoyed the fuck out of a movie of a girl who attached a machine gun to her severed arm and single-handedly took revenge against the Yakuza. However, even if we stretch verisimilitude to its breaking point, sometimes it’s just not enough to help me enjoy a movie as much as I am supposed to. Transformers: Dark of the Moon is one such example. If I wanted to watch a movie with intricate plots that’ll force me to focus all my attention to every single detail so when the twist comes I’d be blown out of my mind, I’d simply stay at home, grab my DVDs of the Godfather trilogy, and watch the shit out of that. (SPOILER ALERT: I don’t really have a Godfather DVD collection. However, I have Barely Legal #5-23, but that’s a completely different story.)

Please don’t try to throw in a plot in my Transformers movies, especially when you have a director who can’t tell the difference between a nice, coherent plot and a drooling dog. You see, the story is a Frankensten’s monster of plot threads thrown together at random, and they try to distract us from the stupidity of the story by throwing explosions, T&A, and robots all over the place.(...)

Green Lantern Review

Green Lantern, for all intents and purposes, is a huge steaming pile of turd. That was the phrase I was thinking of the whole time I got out of the theater. The thing is, I was already expecting it to be bad, since it has an embarrassing 25% rating on Rotten Tomatoes. I was just hoping for a dumb fun time, like Green Hornet.

You know how bad it was? Me and my friends left the theater cursing and screaming all the way to Mercato Centrale, where we stuffed ourselves with some weird Chocolate Chili ice cream just to make us feel better. But enough of that. You want to read our review of Green Lantern, that boring-as-fuck movie starring Ryan Reynolds as Hal Jordan. You want to know what we think of the epic (LOL not really) space opera featuring green space cops who can create almost anything out of their rings.

Spoiler alert: it’s not so good. And I’m saying that as a huge Green Lantern comic book nerd, who loved seeing all those little references to the comic book mythos peppered throughout the film. This movie sucked so much balls it’s not even funny. I was screaming “THIS MOVIE IS BORING AS FUCK” during the climax – you know, supposedly the most exciting part of any movie.
